Carefree? Try High Maintenance! Despite the expense of this item, I bought it because of the brand name I trust and the claims of low maintenance. Boy was I disappointed!After one day of use, the water in the base was yellow with what appeared to be algae floating with it. I have had to empty out and scrub this unit every day to keep it clean (note that I use only filtered water to begin with!). Plus its awkward design makes it more difficult to clean than the cheaper models!Also, even on low it is noisier than I expected with what I consider a "harsh" noise, and it doesn't humidify as big of an area as it claims (although it is adequate for a medium size bedroom).Add to this poor customer service and you have one truly disappointing experience. Noisy and Still Dry The unit makes a very loud, very annoying whiny noise. Even on the lowest fan speed, I can't sleep with it on, and if I am watching tv, I have to turn the tv volume up to hear over it. I have tolerated the noise for a full two days now, and the humidity has only increased 2%. It took about 36 hours to empty its water tank, so it's obviously not very effective at getting the moisture into the air. And as others have indicated, the water in the base of the unit is getting a little grungy looking. One more thing I wish I had considered when shopping for a humidifier, is that some put out warm mist while others put out cold mist. If you are cold natured like me, avoid the cold mist ones! I shiver every time I walk past it. Maybe if you plan to use it in the summer this would be refreshing, but in the winter this is not only unpleasant, but it doesn't make sense to have something that blows cold air into a house you are trying to heat. The one positive thing I can say is that the night light looks pretty cool. big disappointment I thought this humidifier sounded perfect--no filters, low noise, yearly cleaning. What a disappointment. It sounds like a constant running faucet and on any setting other than low, it sounds like industrial equipment. After one month, there was slime and mildew all over the inside. I would never recommend it.

humidifier filters I have purchased official Holmes filters as well as aftermarket products for over 5 years. The ones purchased here are absolutely worthless. They last 48 hours then cease to absorb and wick the water, thereby not allowing the machine to humidify the house. I will have to look elsewhere to purchase replacement filters. The service was good - the supplier of the product to the vendor supplied an inferior product. Generic Brand is much Lower Quality than Holmes Filter There is a huge difference between the generic and the OEM filters. They don't last anywhere near as long. We use 4-5 of the generic filters for every Holmes manufactured filter and that is a costly proposition. The generics stop wicking after a short while and are then completely worthless. Holmes Replacement Filter Cheaper option for my humidifier, but the quality isn't as good (sometimes splits apart a bit), and doesn't last as long.

It is easy to manage and clean. Cute Humidifier I ordered this cool mist Ultrasonic humidifier from Amazon about three months ago for my 1 year olds room. It is very cute, and fits his room's them nicely. I like the way that the steam comes out of Pooh's ears. We've had this humidifier running constantly and haven't had any problems yet. It has an automatic shut off for when the water level runs low so that the motor isn't constantly on when there is no steam to produce (a feature missing on my "adult" one in our master bedroom). I also functions as a night light with the tank lighting up - a little large for a night light, but it also has a separate on/off switch so that you can choose whether to light up the room or not. The only drawback to the humidifier is that the water condenses under pooh, so that when you go to fill the tank, there is a puddle of water on top of it that will slosh off. The other very minor issue I have is with the butterfly knob, as you have to spin it almost all the way around before you get any appreciable amount of steam - they could have done a better job in making it more sensitive. It also actually runs over the green/red on/off LED when you turn it on. Other than those two complaints, this is a very good unit and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Noisy, not very effective This works by a noisy fan at the top that draws moist air from a sponge filter inside. Not a great system. Ultrasonic humidifiers work much better, putting out a lot more mist quietly. The vibrating membrane in an ultrasonic that creates the mist can get clogged up with mineral deposits though, and after a while may be uncleanable to the point that it stops vibrating. We have a Holmes ultrasonic that works great.

smart, sleek and quite the work horse My family and I moved from Southern California (where we slept with the windows open nearly year round for wonderful, well rested sleep) to Phoenix, Arizona (where the humidity hovers at most to 15% in my house according to my hygrometer.) After a month (and before we got the humidifier), my kids (3 and 1) were absolutely suffering. During the night, they were choking and hacking, wheezing and just plugged up. I was no different. Needless to say, our sleep was badly affected. I knew it was the air situation. After 3 nights of researching the different types of humidifiers, I finally settled on buying two Air O Swiss 7144 units (one for each kid's room). Although it was expensive, I buy things for the long haul and figured better to spend up front then have problems with cheaper models down the road. I have since turned it on absolutely every single night for them and the difference is short of miraculous. Here are some points: 1- a full tank lasts two nights running at 8 hours a night with the windows closed and the door nearly shut (about an inch ajar at most) 2- tank is not difficult to fill. I use one 3 gallon water bottle (normally used for my drinking water dispense) to completely fill up both humidifier units 3- to maximize space and thus get the most water into the humidifier, I removed the demineralization cartridge and use only reverse osmosis drinking water for my unit. I have had ZERO WHITE DUST. The R.O. water is purified enough that there are no remaining minerals to be churned out as white dust. This trick also saves me from having to replace the cartridge. (BTW, our tap water is VERY hard so I didn't want to use it even with the demineralization cartridge because why make the machine work harder than it has to?) R.O. water is perfect and again, NO WHITE DUST AT ALL!!!! 4- It's so quiet, it's ridiculous. I LOVE that. 5- The warm mist feature is perfect. It does not raise the temperature of the room so it's never like a sauna. The air leaving the machine even at warm mist feels somewhat cool (and the first night I kept checking in on the kids to make sure I wasn't freezing them) but the unit actually heats the water to 104 degrees which is just the right temp at maintaining room temp (no moist saunas!!) and/or preventing steam burn to your finger in case a curious little one chooses to wave his/her hand in the mist. 6- I've religiously used the units each night for the last 3 months with absolutely no problem. 7- The buttons don't light up or create distracting glows. Important for me because I wanted the kids' rooms to remain relatively dark as that's what they're used to. 8- There is no leaking or condensation on the unit. The mist is so fine that it evaporates before it touches the little folding dinner tray table that I have each unit placed on. The carpet underneath doesn't feel soggy or anything. It truly produces an ultrafine mist that dissipates almost immediately. 9- I can adjust the flow and humidity to my liking (to get 2 nights' worth of output from one tank, I set it on warm mist at the lowest air flow at 55% humidity) 10- It automatically shuts off when it runs out of water. There is a blinking light that indicates that the machine is on "On" but there's no water. I usually press the off button the after the second night's use. If I forget to press off and fill the tank up on the third night, I noticed that since the machine is technically "on" (even though there's no sound or movement indicating that), as soon as I put the filled tank back on the unit, it immediately starts working on the settings I last set it on. 11- I have yet to use the cool mist (since it's still winter) but I read that it actually helps to maintain (at the very least) or slightly lower the room temp which is convenient in summer months. All in all, I love this machine. By the way, on a few occasions when my older child needed me to sleep next to him until he fell back asleep (usually a nightmare woke him up), I noticed within 10-15 minutes that my breathing was VERY different in his room where the unit had been running for several hours into the night. No clogged sinuses or difficult inhalation. Once he was appropriately tucked in and I would go back to my room, within 5-10 minutes, my breathing would get adversely affected. That's how dry the air is in our house. So, that's why after 3 months of enjoying how well it's worked in the kids' rooms, my husband and I are looking forward to our own good sleep after just purchasing our 3rd machine. I Love this Humidifier! I have been using this humidifier for about a month. I live in the mountains of Idaho and our only heat is from our woodstove. Burning wood dries the air out horribly. We have always had trouble with our sinus' in the winter because of the dry heat. This humidifier brought our humidity level up from 34% to 50% in a little over two hours. Even though it is only meant to work in a single room we have noticed a higher humidity in our breakfast room (two rooms away) while this little machine is running. We are looking forward to a much more comfortable winter this year. A Better Humidifier This unit is much better than the evaporative type. I owned an evaporator for 2 years but it had problems with mold in the wicks and filter. Air-O-Swiss uses ionization, not evaporization, to put mist in your air. Ionization is faster and more efficient. It doesn't require a fan to do it's work, as all evaporitive types do, so it is quiet. For compairison, see the Essick Air 336-500 3-Speed Tabletop Evaporative Humidifier, this is an evaporitive type that I owned before buying the Air-O-Swiss. The Air-O-Swiss is easier to clean, more efficient and it looks pretty cool too! It seems that most air cleaner/humidifier makers don't care much about how the product looks in a room, but this one is sleek and subtle, blending well with my modern taste (I hate taupe/beige appliances, but that's me). Whatever it looks like, it needs to be effective, as this unit is. The higher price seems justified by the very useful controls (which are completely absent in cheaper models), the superior design and efficiency. The unit has many settings and digital controls that allow timed use, heated or cool mist, and humidity control. It flashes a symbol to let me know when to fill more water. No need to keep logbooks about cleaning, a different flashing signal tells me whenever I need to do the simple descaling. It's easy to loose track of cleanings without this feature (who has time to keep notes on such a thing?). All humidifiers need some cleaning and filter replacement. The Air-O-Swiss replacement filters (for cleaning the water, replace about 4 times a year), the silver stick (needs replacement rarely, maybe once a year or less) and descaling packets for cleaning the tank (cheap and must be used once every week or two). The costs for all of these are reasonable, perhaps somewhat lower that the costs of the extra things needed for other units I have owned/checked out. Do not neglect the replacement/cleaning processes. This unit, or any other brand, will begin to fail quickly if you do not keep up the maintenance. This is true with any humidifier, but the Air-O-Swiss manages to make these steps easy and relatively hassle-free. I would never go back to the evaporative type, the filters for them are much more expensive, they seem to mold no matter how carefully maintained (a big problem for sensitive people) and they use more electricity than the Air-O-Swiss. The Air-O-Swiss costs more to start, but consider having to buy the other, cheaper type, 2 years worth of replacement wicks, filters and descalers, then scrapping it all to buy this one anyway. This one is a pleasure to use and own. My advice is to consider my experience and buy the more expensive, but much better, Air-O-Swiss.

Vornado Humidifier Vornado HU1-0021-28 Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier We have owned a number of humidifiers in the past. The last one we owned (& liked) was the now discontinued Vornado model (the ugly gray box w/ 2 water tanks and a fan that sat in the lid). This new version, solves some of the problems of the old design and creates new problems of its own. As another reviewer has noted, the beauty of the old system was its simplicity (read: fewer parts to clean). That simplicity, is gone. The design is completely different (and a little more like other brands). The biggest improvement is the noise level. The old design made a loud gargling sound periodically as the air bubbled into the tanks. Further, the lid with the fan, sometimes did not sit right and made a buzzing vibration sound. The new tank now has a filling cap that locks into the tank. There is a separate fancier spring loaded drain for water to move into the basin. The new tank does not sit flat on a surface when you try to fill it, which makes for bonus free isometric training for your biceps under the spout. Finally, there is no longer an option for two tanks, so more refill runs. As for the rest of the design, there is now a physical separation between the evaporation chamber, and where the water tank is placed. At some level, this is nice, since you don't have to worry about bugs and other junk falling into the evaporation chamber. On the other hand, more parts to clean! You also have to be more vigilant about mold buildup inside the chamber since it is closed off and not visible on every refill. On the plus side, the fan is more securely attached to the rest of the humidifier, thus reducing noise. As far as humidification, it still works great. The fan is quieter and just as efficient (if not more). The fancy electronic humidification settings seem to work well and allow for less over-humidification (fewer refills). So in summary: - quiet - efficient - not as simple a design as the older model - more parts that will require careful cleaning. Love Hate relationsihp At first I loved this humidifier. Simple design, easy to refill the tank, easy to replace the filters, quiet efficient operation, simple choices on the electronic pad. Then, one night the fan suddenly began to rattle loud enough that my husband and I couldn't sleep. No matter what I tried, the rattle continued, like the fan had become unbalanced or something. And because it's encased in the lid, there's no way to even attempt to 'wiggle' it back into place. So, due to Amazon's FANTASTIC customer service, I'm sending it back and waiting for a replacement unit that will hopefully work fine for a long time to come. FIVE stars when it worked and ZERO stars now that it doesn't average out to the three stars I gave it. Works great so far. I just got this humidifier a few days ago and it's been great in alleviating respiratory irritation due to dry air in my apartment. Vornado prides itself in having a powerful fan that moves air, and this seems to be the great advantage of this product. You can put it anywhere in your room and it will circulate humid air evenly. There won't even be a wet spot on the ground next to the humidifier. You can't actually see the water vapor coming out, but it doesn't matter since (on the highest setting), the reservoir will be empty after a night's use. The bottom line is that this is easy to use, it's customizable, and it works well. I haven't had to change the filter yet, but will update my opinion once i've had this humidifier for a while.

Headache! Don't buy Holmes® HEPA type Tower Air Purifier - HAP422B-U. The only virtues are superficial: the towers look elegant and take up little space. And OK in the summer it acts as a cooling fan. I don't know that it does any more than a fan. However it came with little instructions, with no pictures, diagrams or any real explanations. Right now I am scouring the net for an 800 number. The filter is almost impossible to change. The door has to be forced open to near breaking; and while you're lining it up to close it back, three of the items keep slipping out of place. Putting it on the floor to do this doesn't help because it rolls around. I'm still not sure the door is completely shut. I can't find any numbers to call, no online instructions, and I can't get the red change filter light to turn off now that I've changed the filter. The ion light is cool but there's no instructions as to when and how to use it. The production must have been outsourced to China, and no translaters were hired. Hepa for the rest of us I think this is a good air cleaner at a reasonable #. + Small footprint (about 10.5" across) vs the typical 14-18" units + highly directional (swivel 80 degrees) + simple controls, it even has a remote for across the room use + Quiet volume (except on HIGH) + Easy access to the filters (x2) + Static discharge (negative ion) feature - The aircraft designed fins are difficult to clean (after a while) - Expensive proprietary filters (they all are but still???) The unit has a door which swings open from the rear, to provide access to the 2 (included) filters. The filters are on grooved tracks; which when moved 3/8 of an inch slide out. The exterior most barrier can be vacuumed gently. This is for medium rooms (rated up to 12' x 16'). Works Great for Indoor Allergy Sufferers I'll start by saying I have pretty bad indoor allergies. I just moved into an apartment about two weeks ago and after the first night, I woke up the next morning feeling terrible. I thought I was just coming down with a bit of a head cold. After only 48 hours after moving in, I noticed the intake fan filters on my computer (custom built by yours truly) were clogged with loads of dust. Normally the filters need to be washed around once per month, not every two days. I wasn't getting sick, it was the ridiculous amount of dust in the air that was screwing with my lungs and sinuses. The carpet in the bedroom had been poorly maintained and didn't look like it had seen a vacuum cleaner in more than a year. If I could have my way I would pull it up and install some linoleum, tile or hard wood to ease my allergies. Since I'm just renting, I had to get creative. I vacuumed the carpet thoroughly and over the course of several days, scrubbed the carpet with a steam cleaning machine. Most folks with a weak stomach would have hurled if they had seen what was floating around in that black dirty water I poured out afterward. Even after all that, there was a tremendous amount of dust in the air. I could turn on my 3 watt LED flashlight and see all of the particulate floating through the air. Late one Saturday night, I wandered into my local Wal-M**t and snatched up this air purifier. Lo and behold! I found something that works! This little slice of heaven moves a ton of air and I don't necessarily consider it to be noisy. I'm used to the white noise my PC makes to begin with and sleep with a fan running so it doesn't bother me at all. I would say it's about as loud as your standard box fan on a medium or low setting. It's comforting to know this machine is chewing through enough air and making a difference in the level of dust in the room. I shut my bedroom door and turned the little unit on "high" and let it go to work. Within two hours there was a noticeable difference in the air and I could no longer see bits of particulate floating through the air with my flashlight. The price of the proprietary filters isn't going to be a problem. I already felt like I was keeping Pfizer (makers of the OTC allergy medicine "Zyrtec") and the Halls cough drop company in business up to this point so in the long run I'll probably end up saving a few bucks. I'm not sure why some people are having trouble attaching and detaching the rear grill. Unless you're a handicapped mongoloid invalid with Parkinson's, it's a pretty straight forward process. I'll have to do a little bit more research on the "ionizer" feature. The instructions claim it's safe, but I know better. I'm not entirely sure it's healthy to inhale electrically charged molecules that are blowing past my head all night. Either way, I'm waking up in the morning feeling great instead of coughing up a lung! I also ordered a 3M Filtrete filter for my central air conditioner. I'm hoping it complements this purifier. My allergies haven't gone away completely, but having this unit around makes a huge difference. It might not work for everyone, but I'm happy with it.

Calutech Blue Whole House Air Purifier I have had this unit for 5 years. I bought it because my basement smelled so musty, all you could smell as soon as you walked into my house was the basement. I was terribly embarassed by the smell and concerned about the health effects. The basement had been damp for the first few years after we built it, and I was concerned the smell was toxic mold. I spent 100's of dollars on mold treatments and preventatives, and expensive one-room air purifiers and Ionizers without any help. I knew the mold spores were in the air, not only on the surfaces and was being spread throughout our home when the furnace or A/C ran. The kid's bedrooms in the basement were unhealthy to sleep in, and even their clothes and bedding smelled like the basement. I installed the unit the day before we left for a 2 day visit out of town. I turned the furnace fan on and locked up the house. When we returned, we were amazed. Usually we come home to a house that smells worse from being closed up. We opened the door and NO SMELL, we walked into the basement, and the whole basement had no smell at all. I know the unit sanitized the air in the whole house and killed the organisms that caused the musty smell, including mold, which I was so worried was adversely affecting my family's health. Well worth the money for its functionality...the cute appearance is a bonus. It is not loud at all and really cranks out serious humidity. Quiet, easy to use, and so gosh darn CUTE! I got the penguin humidifier a week ago after researching multiple brands, some expensive ones, filter ones, big ones, warm ones, etc. And I read the reviews about it leaking or breaking on this one, and essentially there was some complaint on just about every brand out there--always a few problems. So for the $30 this one cost (and the fact that it is ridiculously adorable!) it seemed to cover what I needed: something that was not expensive, not too large and bulky, smaller reservoir so more fresh water going through it (and less water sitting around getting ookey) and would add humidity where ever it was. It has been running almost non-stop for a week, minus filling times or when we were out, and has worked perfectly. The body reservoir, even when running on high, has lasted at least 16 hours. I haven't had problems with white dust on everything like my old-fashioned gigantic noisy one (I use tap water), and it doesn't spray water drops out with the mist either. It definitely made a difference running at night in the bedroom--no noses and throats feeling 'dry as dust' in the AM. The penguin has a small footprint, about 9" diameter and 12.75" tall. It runs almost silently BUT it does make a trickling noise and actually sounds like our tabletop fountain. It's a nice sound during the day but wore on me during the night; I wasn't used the sound and I kept thinking it's leaking when it wasn't. So now I run it for a while before bed and I sleep much better all around. Things to watch out for though... the reservoir opening where you fill it, there is a screw-on cap with a spring-valve (like what's at the bottom of your coffee maker basket). There should be a silicone O-ring that fits in the top of the cap. Our O-ring was inside the opening, and since it was clear-ish could be easily missed. The O-ring could cause the cap to leak if not seated properly and the cap needs to be tightened snuggly. When filled and righted (there's even a little handle to carry it by) it should only drip slightly out of the spring-valve. Check that nothing is clogging the spring-valve by pressing it in (before filling) and that the flap is not folded. Only use COLD water in the reservoir, and if you boiled water WAIT for it to be room temp before using. Using hot water could definitely cause this plastic to crackle and crack. The body must sit squarely on the 'butt' or it can dribble over the side a tiny bit. We have had absolutely no problems with this little cutie, and if I do I'll update my posting. It has a nice rocker on-off switch on his 'left butt cheek'. It has a dial on the front (I'll call it his bellybutton) to adjust the amount of mist; even on high he doesn't drip. The mist dial doesn't seem to affect the fountain noise at all; i.e. the lesser misting does not lessen any gurgling it does. A great little design and it does the job! quiet, efficient and cute! This frog humidifier is wonderful. I'm so glad I finally decided to get one after reading reviews on it since last winter. Unlike this picture, the actual product is a true Granny Smith apple green, or some might call it lime green. PROS -quiet -no expensive filter required. (my Holmes humidifier requires a new $13 filter about every 6 weeks) -shuts off automatically when it runs out of water -easy to refil water -simple and easy to use -cute! CONS -tiny green light is on when humidifier is in use and I persoanlly like a very dark bedroom at night. I just tape a dark piece of paper over it and problem solved. But it can also be a night light for a child's room. -must be on a nightstand or some sort of elevated surface. Some people might not have that room to spare. -it may be TOO cute and irresitible for little ones to keep their hands off it at first. But the newness wears off.

Good product Bought because of the other reviews I read. Seems to be a good product to lengthen the time of your filter. Fresh Air I need to have a humidifier running most of the day because of my sensitive nasal passages. Proper humidity level in the room helps me with breathing, avoiding dry nasal passages that often bleed when too dry. So I have several humidifiers in my home. The problem is that most "cool mist" humidifiers become a breading ground for bacteria and mold. The Kaz KWT-8 Humidifier and Vaporizer Water Treatment is designed to keep "humidifiers and vaporizers clean, fresh smelling, and free of lime build-up." Before I used this treatment, my filters turned yellow and eventually black. The humidifier began to smell. Now that I use the Kaz treatment I have lessened my problems. The air no longer smells and the filters (replacements) have not changed color. I recommend this product for use in cool mist humidifiers. This stuff is great. Saves on filter costs I have a Hamilton Beach TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier. I use this product and the Kaz Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment. Both work awesome! I've been able to stretch a filter up to 4 months without smell, crude build-up, or algea. And, at $15 bucks a filter, you want to use it for as long as possible. Tips: Run the humidifier unitl the filter is dry.(I've been able to figure out how much water to put in the tank for exactly one eight-hour period.) Only use distilled water.(yes its pricey and inconvinient but the filter lasts longer and the humidifier runs cleaner. Just do it...you won't regret it.)

Cute, but poorly made I am getting ready to throw away my child's 2nd Thomas the Tank Humidifier in 4 months. There is a small piece of plastic in the tank that covers the night light on the base that has broken on both of the units. Without this little piece of plastic, the water will not stay in the tank and pours out EVERYWHERE! It is a very cute concept and very appealing to children, but it is just not sturdy enough. CRANE Thomas the Tank needs to goto SODOR for repair!!!! As with the last reviewer, that clear little plastic piece designed to light up the tank fell into the tank after the third time we filled it. Then water leaked everywhere, including onto the electronics. Apparently the plastic is simply glued into the tank and with even the slightest touch it falls back inside. When you place the tank back onto Thomas this piece fits over the other clear plastic piece that houses the actual bulb light. This apparently is enough to cause the piece to loosen and fall into the tank. There is no way to fix this or any warning NOT to touch it. In the course of normal filling its almost guaranteed you will touch this at some time. I dont know about you, but mixing toddlers, water and electricity is a recipe for DISASTER!! CHILDREN SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PRODUCT!! THIS IS A MAJOR DEFECT AND SAFETY HAZARD!!!! THE PRODUCT SHOULD BE RECALLED!!! Thomas Tank Humdifier cooling mist This is a very cute product and sure to be a hit with any Thomas fan. The vapor shoots up out of the steam pipe, the nightlight is nice, and Thomas is adorable. BUT There is a product flaw--the light bulb casing under the water tank comes off and floods the room/table. We had to reglue it once so far--after only five fill ups. Hopefully we'll find a solid fix for it. Otherwise, we'll need to stop using it. As one other person said, electricity and water DO NOT MIX.

It does the Job. I have used it all this winter and it did the trick. My wife was suffering from nose bleeds and cracked skin before we bought this and now she is fine. It holds enough water to only need changed about every other day. The lights that tell you when the resivour needs changed can be seen from across the room. I run mine at the lowest fan speed and it is like it isn't there when the TV is on. With the room quiet you know its there but it isn't annoying. I was dissapointed with the airfilter. It looks like one on a furnace and is loosley attached to the back. It's deffinitly not HEPA quality if thats what your looking for. The Best Bet Tropical is not a word that comes to mind when thinking about Boston in the winter (although, with the magic of global warming, it may not be so far off...). One thing that has been very difficult for us the past few years has been the dryness of the winter months with the associated dry nose, throat and eyes. We bought a Venta Airwasher and, I must confess, this is largely a waste of money. It's well-intentioned, but just didn't really add much moisture to the air. At the same time, the Venta was very expensive to buy and expensive to operate needing lots of additive. As one reviewer put it: "Holy mother of G*d! $439 and for what?!" That about sums up our experience with the Venta... So, as per usual I spent days and days reading about humidifiers and learning that, basically, they all have craptacular aspects, but a few emerged as really promising. One of them was the Vornado, which a friend has and enjoys. We really liked the design and the technology of this unit, but found that for a little bit more, we could pull trigger on the Bemis 4D7 800 Digital Evaporative Humidifier w/ AirCare® Filter. The main differences we could see were that the Bemis had a bigger capacity for taking care of our whole house basically in the same way as the Vornado, and with a few added features: * Disperse up to 13 gallons of water per day over 2700 square feet of space. * Holds up to 5.5 gallons of water. * Continuously variable fan speed setting with quiet night-time setting. * Digital Control Panel * Automatic humidistat maintains optimum humidity level. * Removable power pack simplifies cleaning. * Concealed control panel maintains the clean, smooth lines of the unit. So, I hooked it up and put it in our foyer and it seems to be doing a good job. It's a nice machine, pretty clean lines and goes well with the house. It is BIG, however, and it's like having a radiator in that room now, but the space was sort of dead anyways, so it's no great loss. One key thing, however, is that, just like the Vornado, it makes the GLUG GLUG GLUG sound from time to time, which is taking some getting used to... In my search, NO humidifier is perfect--they all have a number of flaws. This unit seems to be among the best in that it does a good job adding humidity to the air (but not over-doing it as some complain with warm-mist humidifiers) and is fairly easy to clean. In sum, this is an excellent humidifier that is well-made and does its job admirably. Recommended. good while it worked---but poor reliability This is a big humidifier for adding moisture to several rooms or an entire house. My house is ~1800 sq feet and gets very dry in the winter. This humidifier did a nice job of adding a lot of moisture to the house before it died. Within the first year, the motor stopped working, and I had to send the entire motor unit in for repair. Then it died again---same problem with the motor failing. Very frustrating, and now I have a large piece of useless plastic. I would not recommend Essick/Bemis products because of very poor reliability.

Very Good Unit I've had this unit for 5 years now and it has worked extremely well. Lasko is also a very good company to deal with. When I originally bought it from a local retailer, the humidistat control was acting a little weird so I called Lasko. They paid for the return postage and sent me another one. The replacement unit was damaged during transit, so I called them again and they paid to have it returned again and sent me another unit before I actually sent the damaged one back. All this happened with a 2 or 3 week period. Can't say enough good about Lasko customer service. In the 5 years of ownership, I've only had to replace the drip shield once because it got too rusty. The pump just went so I am ordering another one. Parts and filters are very reasonably priced. The unit humidifies my mobile home easily and doesn't overwork to keep my place a 50% humidity. When this one goes, I won't hesitate to buy another Lasko. Read the instructions... or else. We bought two of these to help with some process control. Sadly, the guy who installed them just poured in water and plugged it in. It seemed to work but... The instructions clearly tell you to release the float from its packing tape. If you do not, the humidifier will continue to run even when it is out of water. We found this destroys the circulation pumps. On one, the impeller assembly melted and on the other the windings opened. Sooo... be sure to read the instructions!

Pricey and ineffective This humidifier does the job...poorly. I live in Maine and the air gets terribly dry because of winter and heat from the furnace. If I put this in the auto setting, the unit turns on and off every few seconds! The filters for this model are really hard to find, so unless you have time to drive around town or you like to buy for stuff online, it is not worth it. And did I mention that this humidifier makes my house stink? It did it from day ONE -at first I thought it was because it was new-. One week later it would stink even more because of mold in the filter!!! This junk is not made for heavy duty, like the manufacturer suggests. Save some nomey and buy either a cheaper humidifier or invest in one that is better quality. Same as Holmes -- crappy humidifier As another reviewer mentioned, you cannot use the "auto" settings on this humidifier, because it perpetually cycles on and off (set it on 45, and it goes on at 44, off three seconds later at 45, on two seconds later at 44, etc.). I also don't think it humidifies my house. And aside from all of that, the filter is only good for a month or so (if you have dogs or cats, even less). I'd say save the money from buying these over and over (I have, until this year, bought one every other year) and just get a really good warm-mist or cool-mist humidifier. I'm not convinced these fan-based things even work, and they are incredibly loud in addition to all of that. Aggravating This humidifier works well but cycles on and off, on and off EVERY 6 SECONDS!!!! If you set it to 50% humidity, it turns on at 49% and off at 51% just a few seconds later, and then starts over. I can't sleep at all with it. It is useless unless you want to run it continuously, in which case buy a cheaper humidifier!

Use It Exclusively Now for the second year, I use this product exclusively. From October through March, my humidifer gets a workout, being used at least every night in the bedroom. This product keeps the humidifer clean, smelling good, and appears to exdend the filter wick life. I have had no sinus infections for the second year in a row - and used to have them on a regular basis. Of course, I have nothing scientific to prove its the ant-bacteria treatment, but that's the only thing different I am doing as far as air quality treatment in the bedroom. Impossible directions for use The directions for use on this bottle say to add one capful of liquid to a gallon of water. Given the shape of the cap and an internal seal-ring, the volume you'd get would be about 1/2 teaspoon. The old green bottle with yellow top had a cap that could be used for measuring, the cap volume was about one tablespoon. When I phoned Essick Air, customer service told me to 'just pour a little out, whatever you think is a good amount.' About two years' ago Essick Air switched from the green bottle w yellow cap to the blue bottle w white cap, but they have never updated their labeling (an EPA violation), and never updated the images on their website or on Amazon.com. You will frequently see the green bottle offered for sale, but only the blue bottle will be delivered! I saved a couple of old green bottles and now I transfer the liquid from the blue bottle to the green one so I have a measuring device readily available. Great Bacteriostatic Our home humidifier is on non stop. We had purchased Essick Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment when we purchased the humidifier and have an excellent result. We never have a slime or bacteria problem and I only refill the humidifier once a week.

It has been running almost non-stop for a week, minus filling times or when we were out, and has worked perfectly. The body reservoir, even when running on high, has lasted at least 16 hours. I haven't had problems with white dust on everything like my old-fashioned gigantic noisy one (I use tap water), and it doesn't spray water drops out with the mist either. It definitely made a difference running at night in the bedroom--no noses and throats feeling 'dry as dust' in the AM. The penguin has a small footprint, about 9" diameter and 12.75" tall. It runs almost silently BUT it does make a trickling noise and actually sounds like our tabletop fountain. It's a nice sound during the day but wore on me during the night; I wasn't used the sound and I kept thinking it's leaking when it wasn't. So now I run it for a while before bed and I sleep much better all around. Things to watch out for though... the reservoir opening where you fill it, there is a screw-on cap with a spring-valve (like what's at the bottom of your coffee maker basket). There should be a silicone O-ring that fits in the top of the cap. Our O-ring was inside the opening, and since it was clear-ish could be easily missed. The O-ring could cause the cap to leak if not seated properly and the cap needs to be tightened snuggly. When filled and righted (there's even a little handle to carry it by) it should only drip slightly out of the spring-valve. Check that nothing is clogging the spring-valve by pressing it in (before filling) and that the flap is not folded. Only use COLD water in the reservoir, and if you boiled water WAIT for it to be room temp before using. Using hot water could definitely cause this plastic to crackle and crack. The body must sit squarely on the 'butt' or it can dribble over the side a tiny bit. We have had absolutely no problems with this little cutie, and if I do I'll update my posting. It has a nice rocker on-off switch on his 'left butt cheek'. It has a dial on the front (I'll call it his bellybutton) to adjust the amount of mist; even on high he doesn't drip. The mist dial doesn't seem to affect the fountain noise at all; i.e. the lesser misting does not lessen any gurgling it does. A great little design and it does the job! quiet, efficient and cute! This frog humidifier is wonderful. I'm so glad I finally decided to get one after reading reviews on it since last winter. Unlike this picture, the actual product is a true Granny Smith apple green, or some might call it lime green. PROS -quiet -no expensive filter required. (my Holmes humidifier requires a new $13 filter about every 6 weeks) -shuts off automatically when it runs out of water -easy to refil water -simple and easy to use -cute! CONS -tiny green light is on when humidifier is in use and I persoanlly like a very dark bedroom at night. I just tape a dark piece of paper over it and problem solved. But it can also be a night light for a child's room. -must be on a nightstand or some sort of elevated surface. Some people might not have that room to spare. -it may be TOO cute and irresitible for little ones to keep their hands off it at first. But the newness wears off.

Expensive, but worth it for those who like humidity The folks who made this humidifier were not playing around. This easy-to-clean, easy-to-program, easy-to-set-up machine has changed my world. It is not very loud--no louder than other warm-air humidifiers I've bought before, you don't have to hold it under a sink to fil it, and there's no chance of it tipping over and spilling water all over your floor because of it's lockable cover. This humidifier is a lot like a rice cooker, with a huge display and a bunch of on and off settings. Burr!! My friend has this item. She showed me how to use it and it works incredibly well. I bought one and love it!! I then bought one for my sister who lives in Hawaii. They are shipping it to her for free!! Unheard of shipping to Hawaii let alone free! It really cools the air and is light and easy to move. You just put these cooling things in the freezer and add cold water. It does the rest! You will love it!! GARBAGE, DO NOT BUY! Wouldn't recommend this product. When I got this cooler the remote was already dead, the on/off button wouldn't work! It doesn't really cool the air that much. I have an older (10-year old) air cooler that I use at home which cooled my room better! Don't waste your money on this product! Total garbage! Cool? The product did not cool the air. It was just a fan. I called the service number to see if I was doing something wrong. I never was able to reach a person. I emailed the company and they never returned my call. Cigar Oasis Humidifier Had to return the humidifier under warranty because it would not regulate the humidity in my humidor. The company was very cooperative and returned the repaired unit a couple weeks ago. Since then everything seems to be working properly. I'm happy with the product and service from Cigar Oasis. Use only with travel humidors This humidifier will do fine for humidors that hold 10 or less cigars. Any more than that and you will be disappointed with the unit's efficiency. I had a box of cigars in my humidor (which holds about 40 sticks) and I was constantly refilling the water cartridge everyday. I did not fill it for two days, only to find that a good portion of my cigars were ruined! Stick with the XL version if you don't want to deal with the hassle(and potential loss of cigars) that the Ultra brings. Very nifty - albiet a little inaccurate I like this gadget. Eventhough the setting is a little inaccurate in regards to actual hunidity levels - this can be compensated by selecting a higher humidity level setting. I.e. I selected 78 to get the desired 74. Wonderful product This is a wonderful product. It has helped my son sleep at night when he needs it. The negative reviews on here are referring to pricing, which don't make the reviews valid. I was skeptical at first I was skeptical at first but was won over by this product. I originally bought the air purifier to help our family's allergies and sinus problems. It was hard to believe that a product that has no filters, nothing to clean or wash off, could actually work. My brother-in-law who has a severe allergy to dogs has never been able to spend more than an hour or two at our house. Since we got our air purifier, he has been able to spend several hours at our house without any symptoms or discomfort. I'm a believer! IT WORKS (Owner of an Airfree P1000 and a RabbitAir BioGS) I make about 10 to 20 purchases on Amazon every month - both for personal and business uses - but I almost never review the products I buy. However, I thought I should write one for the Airfree P1000 because it really is a great product that deserves a little of my time and effort. We own an Airfree P1000 and a RabbitAir BioGS. We put the Airfree P1000 in our bedroom because it's silent and serves as a nightlight for me; I am night blind. The light is adjustable so I can keep it dim and not disturb my husband. We don't always get to open our bedroom window because it is right by our neighbor's patio where she keeps one of her dogs and she is not always home to clean up after the dog right after it goes. Also, we have two cats and a dog so it's impossible to have the bedroom smelling fresh. However, the P1000 was able to completely freshen-up the bedroom in just a couple of hours. It even removed the scent coming from the plug-in air freshener. And being inexpensive and virtually maintenance free are definitely additional pluses. I am extremely pleased with the Airfree P1000. p1000 I think it does what it's supposed to. Less allergies since I started using it. I'm afraid to unplug just in case it is doing it's job! It works. After paying well over a hundred dollars for a humidifier, I got so tired of the sloppy job of cleaning slime out of it that I was almost ready to throw the thing away. After replacing its $15.00 filters (every 3 months) that seem to do about nothing, it didn't seem worth the cost and effort to keep it operating. The unit's instructions advised me not to use any additives but just clean the thing about every filling and keep replacing those filters as directed. So, since I was going to throw the thing out anyway, I tried one of these cartridges. It worked. It's been about a month, and the slime is starting to come back, but that's supposed to be the effective life of the cartridge. The humidifier survives. I still have to clean it, but the task is now infrequent and easier. So, it does what it's supposed to do; does it for as long as it's supposed to do it; hasn't harmed the over-priced humidifier; and is good for the environment as long as it keeps this humidifier out of a landfill. it is an expensive unnecessary The cartridge costs about $5 and last only 20 days before the filter and the cartridge starting reek. However, I found that Holmes Bacteriastat cost about $7 and could last for a season and it also extended the life of the filter. My suggestion is to buy the Bacteriastat. Doesn't Fit with all humidifiers. This product will not fit if you have a vornado humidifier or planning to buy one. The cartridge has a shape of a ball about an inch. The tank for the vornado has a very small opening. If only I knew, I wouldn't have purchased one. I just gave the cartridge to a friend and she said it works great.

Great humidifier doesn't require filters I used to buy more expensive humidifiers that required replacement filters that cost essentially as much as this humidifier. This one puts out a warm mist with no white dust. I rinse the water dish with vinegar once a week, wipe it down and it's clean. I have a two-story house with a furnace humidifier, but I still run two of these humidifiers on low 24/7 in winter. We never have sore throats or colds. The money we save on cough drops and cold meds and doctor visits more than pays for these humidifiers. Really good humidifer This is quiet and well-designed humidifier. Although the plastic seems a bit cheap, the unit works very well. It is also easy to clean and no filters are needed. My only problem with this humifier is that the reservoir is a bit small. I'm not sure what the 2.5 gal refers to as this unit can't hold more than a gallon. However, a full tank lasts about 7 hours with the setting on high, which is sufficient for me. Definitely NOT 2.5 gallons I owned the larger version of this humidifier for 2 years and was pretty happy with it. While the amount of build up from our hard water made it annoying to clean up on a regular basis, the unit functioned well overall. It was simply designed, not an eyesore like some of the other ones on the market, and did a good job of adding humidity to the front half of our 1200 sqft apt. When are unit died about a month ago, I went to buy it again and found this one as the closest thing. In the picture and description it just looked like a slightly updated version with slightly less capacity (the one that died was a 3 gallon version). Unfortunately, when this unit arrived, I was extremely dissapointed to see that it was nowhere near the size of the other. THIS UNIT IS DEFINITELY NOT 2.5 GALLONS. It is much more likely around a gallon...probably one of the smallest humidifiers I've ever seen. It still works well and is designed nicely, but it means we are changing the tank (which is best described as cute) about every 6 hours. I would recommend this humidifer for a small studio space or office where you are only using it when you are around. It is really not suitable for larger spaces.

Lasts a mere three days! I cleaned the unit (Graco 4-gallon cool mist) every day and filled it with water run through a very good quality countertop filter. Even doing this, I went through two of these $11 filters per WEEK (TWENTY-FOUR TIMES as many filters as stated by the manufacturer!), and simply couldn't afford to spend nearly $90 a month (just in filters!) to run a humidifier. That is, putting it simply, absolutely insane. Design is faulty -- filtered water shouldn't trash a brand-new filter in less than four days. I don't know anyone who could afford $90 a month for humidifier filters. Great Humidifier! I love it! This Graco humidifier is really great! It has a nice feature where it shuts off the fan when the desired humidity level is reached, then comes back on when it senses it went down. It also has a quiet fan speed too. It made a "white noise" that was great for sleeping baby! There was an issue of Graco running out of filters back in March. This humidifier is a new product for them and the filters were not to be found anywhere. Happily this should be straightened out by June 2009 or before. I finally found them on Amazon and ordered two. If I wanted the filters I had to pay the exhorbitant price of nearly $20 for shipping! I complained to Graco and luckily they were happy to refund my shipping costs if I filled out the necessary paper and sent in the UPC and receipt. Graco was wonderful to deal with! Does the job!!! It appears that the first guy to review this humidifier didn't bother to read the directions. He said there is no way to tell if the unit needs to be refilled. That is completely incorrect. The digital readout will indicate the level of humidity in the air but if one of the bottles is empty an "F" displays on the left or right to tell you that the bottle on that side needs to be filled. This unit definitely does the job but it is quite flimsy and it is very noisy. I find it hard to justify the $180 price based on build quality but it does do the job. Humidity gauge is nice Poor customer service - does humidify We didn't buy this through Amazon, but I need to review it where I can. We have had to replace the power head three times dut to malfunctions, and the third time took about four months and only did we get it after complaining to the BBB! Overall the unit does provide humidity and it is noisy on the high fan settings, but for this level of humididty to cover this volume what would you expect. Problems with the third head now are that it doesn't notify when the tanks are out, so we have to just check it daily, but I'm not going to go through the H*** I just went through to get a new head. The intake filters are a joke as they restrict the air flow so much, a lot goes around the filter as it has no positive seal to the unit (really, it just sits on the side). Now, the stoppers on the tanks wont seal properly so unless I carry the tanks upright I'll dribble water all over the place (deal with Essick - NO!). Replacement for Holmes "D" filter I have had a horrible time trying to locate the Holmes D filter after purchasing the HUMIDIFIER COOL MIST CONSOLE. Thank goodness for Amazon. This is the exact replacement filter for the Holmes model number 3655U. The price is a little higher than I expected but since I can not find them any place else and I can get the filter shipped for free with Prime, I don't mind paying a little bit more. Good Value I purchased this item through Amazon for $12 which is much cheaper than the $20 asked for in most stores. Buy it here. Seriously, these are no better then any of the others, however I couldn't find them in the story anywhere the last few months of the winter. Effective; Economical; Some routine maintenance required.
I have the predecessor that was black in color. It's 3 years old and still works great. Definitely evaporates lots of water into the air. The reservoir must be filled 2 to 3 times per day depending on how often your furnace comes on. It's somewhat of a chore but I get used to it. Keeping the household humidity at 60% or better surely makes lower thermostat settings tolerable so it's a money saver in that regard. The unit uses about 100 watts during its intermittent runs.

Mine is so accurate that it is almost perfectly synchronized to furnace operation. Furnace comes on and shortly thereafter the Lasko humidifier starts up. Furnace shuts off and shortly thereafter the humidifier shuts off. I presume the same accuracy is maintained in this newer white model.

These do use disposable paper filters. I use 2 per season. Cheapest source for the filters is direct from Lasko. I bought a box of 10 for $50 right after I bought the humidifier and I've got about 5 filters left. Even if you throw away about half of them, you'll save money compared to single filter prices at brick and mortar stores. The shipping was free at the time. Maybe it still is.

Humidifiers require periodic maintenance. These Lasko's are no exception. Each year, I sit the thing in the bathtub and fill it's reservoir with vinegar/water and let it run about 30 minutes. This dissolves or loosens the mineral deposits. After rinsing, I then fill it with a bleach/water solution and let it run about 30 minutes to kill mold spores and dormant bacteria.

That yearly demineralizing/disinfecting is somewhat of a chore but I only have to do it once. That's enough to get me through the entire heating season.

All humidifiers require some maintenance--even the ones connected directly to your furnace. I've read operator's manuals for most every one of the furnace mounted units and some of the maintenance procedures are complex and labor intensive compared to the little bathtub routine I've developed for this Lasko.

When I think I will install a furnace mounted unit I search the internet and read the reviews and realize why I put up with this Lasko cleaning routine. Many of those furnace mounted units require demineralizing and disinfecting just like the Lasko--except that I can put the Lasko in a bathtub and keep the mess contained. If I had to rinse and clean a furnace mounted unit, I'd have to use a wet/dry vac to sop up the spillage all over the basement floor, I'm sure. On top of that mess, it seems that furnace mounted units die at an early age due to mineral deposits that can't be controlled.

When the temperatures drop to about 15°F or below, our furnace runs a lot. The more the furnace runs the more the Lasko humidifier runs. I'm sure I have to fill the removeable reservoir 3 times a day or more. It seems to be sized so that a full reservoir lasts about 8 hours. That's enough to get a full night's sleep. Actually, the removeable reservoir holds about 8 hours worth. There's another several gallons in the base to supply the unit with water so you can easily stretch it to 12-14 hours between fillings. I do it all the time. It's just that if you stretch it to 12 hours or more, you'll have to fill the removable reservoir 1.5 times to completely "fill 'er up" again.

All in all, I don't think I could live without a humidifier. We feel warmer, the children cough less while sleeping, there's no static electric sparks when we touch objects or each other ... it's worth the hassle, I think.

This unit says it will do a 3200 square foot home. I guess that's so, but, it's quite nicely sized for homes smaller than that because it won't have to run on high to do the job. Buying the biggest humidifier means you can run the fan on low so it's as quiet as possible.

Once a year I also take it apart to clean the dust from the fan blades and the vortex shroud. This isn't absolutely necessary but it makes it look new again. About 6 or 8 screws removed lets the thing come almost entirely apart for cleaning.

So, a humidifier takes some work no matter what type you get. For a household humidifier, I like this Lasko but I've also got a wife and kids to share in the task of refilling it 3 times a day.

I'm a home handy man so I'll be able to replace the motor in this thing when it goes bad. I don't think it will cost much.

Lasko sells parts and that's what I truly love! Unlike other companies, Lasko actually has parts available and they sell them at reasonable prices.

We use Lasko ventilation fans year round as a sleep aide to produce "white noise." I've got a remote controlled fan that I've come to depend on. After about 4 years of daily night time use, I needed a motor for it last year and, sure enough, Lasko sold one to me and the cost was about 1/3rd that of a new fan.

For the home do-it-yourselfer types, Lasko is the only way to go because they sell parts. Other companies, like Holmes, don't stock any parts at all. Once the complete Holmes unit comes from Taiwan or Sri Lanka to your store's shelf, that's it--you can't get a part even if it was missing from the package before you bought it.

Lasko has a respectable warranty and they don't charge a fee. Holmes and other companies like them charge you a fee that they call "handling" just to get a warranty remedy. That "handling" fee is usually 2/3 or more the cost of a new fan. In other words, you have to pay to return the defective item to Holmes, you also have to pay that "handling fee", and then they might send you a replacement. Lasko doesn't do that. I think that they do require that you ship the item back to them at your cost.

This is a recirculating type of humidifier so it doesn't throw white dust all over everything. The other type of humidifier uses heat to evaporate water (like a distiller) and in the process, all of the minerals of the water become airborne grey-white dust. I don't like that idea. These recirculating types just trickle large quantities of water through a paper filter. The filter retains the minerals.

I remember as a kid, about 45 years ago, I used to sit on my grandmother's floor and enjoy the breeze from a "ottoman" style fan and it had the name "Lasko" on it. I used to think it had something to do with Alaska. I presume it's the same company--still making fans and things that circulate air.

Lasko 9 Gallon Humidifier
This is my second one of these. The first one performed well but quit working after 3 years. It was inexpensive so I bought another one. I bought a cheaper model this time that didn't have the LED displays the first one had. This one just has a knob with no readout of setting or room humidity. The reason I did that was the LEDs on the first one quit working after about two years. I figured this simpler one would be less likely to fail - who knows?

I keep it in the master bathroom and fill it twice a day from the tub. It uses a lot of water - which is what I want it to do, but without the convenience of the adjacent tub it would be a pain - all these portable ones probably have this problem.

I keep it on the medium fan setting and it seems fairly loud for the first few days but now I'm used to it and I don't notice it coming on and off.

The area around the unit remains dry so it works well as an evaporative humidifier - which is what you want it to do. It puts moisture into the the air, not the floor. I keep it on a bath mat to catch the drops that result from the filling operation.

My bedroom ceiling and wall joints have quit coming apart in the wintertime like they did before I added this humidifier - so it does the job well.

Great unit for the price
Works great, easy to clean, low maintenance cost. Bought my first and found the pitcher lid was cracked after about a week. It leaked a little. Faxed Lasko a copy of my receipt with explanation of the problem. Received a replacement lid that week. Cleans the air, parts are cheap and is easy to clean. Great product.

very disappointed
I ordered this with high hopes and quickly became very disappointed. After the first day it began to leak excessively all over the floor. I took the unit apart to look for any obvious signs of a problem but found nothing. Put it back together again and within a day, it leaked again. I decided that I must have just gotten a "lemon" so I opted to replace it with another identical unit, which Amazon did replace very quickly-I had a new in 3 days! After the 3rd day of running the unit, it too began to leak excessively. Luckily, I had set the unit in a large rubber maid container so it did not leak all over the floor. I think there is an obvious manufacturer defect with this unit that must have been overlooked. I am currently searching for another product that is also an air cleaner & a humidifier all in one but am not having much luck. The design and concept of this one is very similar to the design of the Air O Swiss air washer. May give that one a try.

Good Product
I've used this product for almost 4 months now. I have had no problems with leaks or anything else. It works great. I live in an apartment, and only use it in my bedroom. Now that allergy season is here, I definitely notice the difference. My room is just fine, and pretty allergen free. When I walk out of my bedroom, I start getting a stuffy nose and sneezing from the allergens. It also does a good job in keeping my room humid.

Good product, but has design flaws...
...or alternatively quality control issues. I had, like the previous review, a leaking problem. It's a sneaky problem which I am almost 100% sure of is related to the filling cap on the tank. The problem with the vertical tank is that the only thing that prevents too much water to enter the basin is the vacuum created in the tank when the water leaves it. If that vacuum is disrupted the water will just continue to flow into the basin until it overflows. In this case it's the cap that is not sealing properly. The seal gradually loosens over a couple of hours until something gives way and the water starts flowing out. So if the unit looks fine when you set it up you might wake up (hopefully) around 2 am in the morning with a wet floor. I am on my second unit now which seems ok but its being monitored closely and sits in a rubbermaid container until it proves its not a bed wetter anymore. I spoke with the distributer (Kaz) who claim that this model does not show any excessive amount of warranty claims. I am not sure if they would ever to admit to anything else though. Another potential issue I found is that the disc that are spinning inside the unit ([...]) are sometimes a bit mis-aligned. For instance one of the discs might be too close to the edge and generates a scraping noise. You can remedy this by just removing one of the discs from the axle.

Aside from these flaws I think the unit works great when in working order. The dics turn nice and quiet in the water basin and the fan is silent enough on the lowest setting. It keeps the humidity well and when it reaches the desired level it shuts off saving both electricity and on the noise levels. The unit can be set on continuous use which the manual calls "automatic". Unfortunately its not very specific about what that mode does, in my opinion it just seems like its permanently on regardless of the environmental humidity. This would be useful in the summer when the humidity is high enough for the unit to shut down but you still want to benefit from the units filtering qualities (pollen, dust, mold, etc.)
I like the fact that it has a washable filter that does not need exchanging. You have the option of an additional disposable coal filter to catch smells but its not mandatory.

The display is nice and crisp and with a pretty blue back light so it's easy to control in the dark should you need to. The display shuts off after a few seconds so you don't need to worry about that glare that some products create from persistent led's and back lights.

All in all its a good product (when working), but has some design/quality control issues that might want you to think twice, or at least make sure you have a good return policy if you are affected by these issues.

User manual is worthless
I'd love to tell you how this product functions, but the user manual is so completely worthless that I can't tell you! The unit comes without any instructions as to how one actually fills the tanks with water, what to do with the demineralization cartridge (which shouts READ THE MANUAL BEFORE USING on its package), where to place the unit for optimal usage, nor whether it automatically shuts off once the desired humidity is reached.

It's possible this could be a good product, but since I don't dare turn it on without knowing why the warning label screams at me to read the demineralization cartridge instructions before using for the first time, I'll never know! Not to mention there doesn't appear to be any opening for water!!

I knew I shouldn't have bought this from a company that scammed the whole world with their useless Ionic Breezes.

Recalled: DON'T BUY
I believe this unit has been recalled.

I tried to buy one at Bed, Bath & Beyond after seeing it advertised in their latest 20% off coupon mailer. I couldn't find it on display, but eventually a stock person got one for me from the back warehouse area. When I tried to check out, the clerk got a confused look on her face, and called for a manager, who explained that the unit was recalled and they were unable to sell it.

Later, I found these still on the Bed, Bath & Beyond website, so I wrote their customer service and was told that there is a "return to vendor" order on the units. I surprised that Amazon is still (apparently) selling them.

Looks 10 - warm mist 1
Really like the looks of this unit, and the cool mist function works fine - unlike the previous reviewer, both of my tanks work fine - first the right, then it empties, and then the left empties. Yes, the lights are bright, but not in the bedroom, so who cares. What does bother me though is the worthless warm mist function. I pressed the heat button and the mist temperature actually went down two degrees. I don't know if this is a defect or not as I've been trying to get a replacement for this unit from Bed Bath and Beyond for over a week, to no avail... If you like cool mist only, with an idiot light that says heat, but doesn't operate, this unit is for you... Otherwise the AOS 7144 is the one I've opted for...

breathing easy again
I own one of these and am getting ready to purchase a second. I have severe asthma, and this machine greatly reduces the amounts of contaminents in the air and makes my life a whole lot easier. My brother also has owned one for YEARS, and NEVER turns it off. The air is so much cleaner and purer when this is in use. I live in the panhandle of Texas where the wind and the dust NEVER stop blowing, and when you walk into a room, you can tell if the machine is on or not. It removes much of the dust, not all of it, it is not a miracle machine. As far as an ionizer, I don't really know what it does. All I know is I can breath with this machine on, and my medication intake is greatly reduced. I find cleaning it very easy. One screw under the front, remove the filter, dust it off, dust the inside of the machine, reach in and remove the metal screen thing, run it under water, pull out the back and dust it off. Re-assemble, and turn it back on and breath again. I would greatly recommend it for anyone with any type of COPD.

Three Words - Save Your Money
The only thing that Dave Oreck has succeeded in with these filters is a marketing gimmick. There is so much blow by in this thing that there seems to be more dust around it than in it. I love the demonstration where the unit cleans up the smoke in the little test chamber. Unless your room is this size, don't bother with this filter. Check out Consumer Reports review on the Orecks.. .dead last.

Doesn't it seem to be a dream that you can dip this thing into water and a little soap and it magically comes clean? Don't count on it. Next to industrial strength oven cleaner, NOTHING will get this clean if you smoke or cook within 30 feet of the thing. I went into my local store to ask about this issue and was given some simple steps to remedy this until I pointed out that the cell they had on DISPLAY showed the deposits in the center that I spoke of... oops!!!

The plus is that it does capture SOMETHING from the air but is a CADR of 30 REALLY worth the price? I think it would be more effective to put a fan in the window on the exhaust setting than to waste your money on this thing.

The ionizer? lol.. what an ionizer ACTUALLY does it dull your sense of smell.. So that fresh smell you THINK the machine is producing is actually in your imagination.

If you really feel the need to drop the cash for this, I have two that I would be willing to sell and include the Asail-a-Cell cleaner and replacement charcoal filters as a bonus. Never mind I wouldn't even do that to a stranger.

The certification this machine carries can be had for 500.00 I believe and the organization is not offering a seal of approval on ANYTHING. I guess maybe I should get one and stick it on my tailpipe.

Happy Oreck Customer Going On 10 Years
I've tried the Hepa filter brands and found them to be unable to totally "scrub" the air as fast or through as the Oreck. My husband was a chain smoker our first 3 years of marriage and I had purchased a $400 Austin Air Healthmate air purifier. It had an enormous filter and boasted of scrubbing the air down to .01 micron. Well, honestly all it did was push the air around. There was no way to thoroughly clean the filter, and the charcoal replacement cost was just not affordable like Oreck. I've used other brands as well, but I came back to Oreck, bought a vacuum cleaner and cordless iron and have been a very pleased customer ever since.

Works Well!
This purifier has all but kept my pet allergy at bay and has collected a large amount of dust/debris/animal hair that's been flying around in my air system. I leave it on all day and night.

The prior review stated that a ring at the base destroyed their carpet. This product is designed to gather in dirty air and spit out fresh air - not all of the dust is going to get pulled in and some WILL collect at the base - but unless you vacuum once per year, this is no problem at all. Just vacuum your carpet regularly.

I have light carpet (Mohawk I think) and it's fine. There is a ring where the unit was sitting, but this is from the base sitting in one spot for a while - much like a table leaves an indent in the carpet that comes up after a time.

This product does NOT get 5 starts because the filters are hard to come by. I have to order mine online since Home Depot / Lowes / Target / WalMart / PriceClub (and derivatives) do not carry it.

I've also seen other sites that say the controls are difficult. It's like a cheap car with automatic transmission from the 80's - 3 speeds and an overdrive (psuedo 4th speed).

Oh - and it comes with a remote - how can you go wrong?

Finally - the price. Amazon's price is ridiculous - Home Depot and Lowes regularly sell these things for $180. Occasionally they have 50% off sales. So, get the filters online, but definitely buy the thing in a store.

1) Tower air purifier is somewhat noisy on its fast setting and a distraction on the "Turbo" setting.
2) Would like to be able to purchase an extra cleanable hepa filter but Hunter makes it difficult to buy. Their website and the product
manual which comes with the unit doesn't even mention the possiblity of buying an extra in case the supplied "lifetime" one is accidently damaged during cleaning or handling.
3) The automatic guage which tells you when to replace the prefilter and the when to clean the main hepa filter works on the accumulated time the unit has been running since the last replacement or cleaning. This may cause you to be late in doing maintaince on the filters if the unit is filtering air that has more particulates per unit/volume than what the air quality engineers designed the unit to treat.

Beware from buying from Allergy B Gone
Thought I purchased the Honeywell 504HAC replacement filter as listed on Amazon, but instead received a generic version that I could have purchased for significantly cheaper. I phoned the company but got no answer. I emailed the company and got no response. Would avoid any transactions with this company. I placed a complaint with Amazon and hope that this problem can be remedied.

Works Great. The handle that they put on the filter is really just a gimmik, but they also changed the outer most layer from paper to a tough plastic. It lets you soak the filter in hot water to get the minerals out. It looks like you can reuse it at least a couple of times.

Be warned, the filter is a GENERIC replacement for the HAC504

I don't like being bait & switched, so I am dropping the rating down to 1.

But the price for the HW500 with a few minutes of online searching was, at it's cheapest, $1.50 more, and even on amazon from a non-misleading item search, was $3.50 more. And the company did ship pretty quickly; it arrived 3 days after the order was placed. For that, I am raising the rating to 2.

I have no review on how well the HW500 will work in the Honeywell humidifier yet. I am going to go ahead and use one for a couple of weeks to see how well it works. I will say that the diameter is smaller the the HAC504, but I am not sure if that will make a difference. If it works OK, I will come back and raise the rating to a 3.

To the seller: To get any higher, I would need to see some indication in the main product item page that this is a GENERIC filter instead of a Honeywell brand item.

Best Air Purifier ever
This is the best air purifier! I researched a lot as I wanted one that got rid of chemicals. I was working in my studio and a friend sprayed windex right next to me on some glass. I put the purifier nearby and it got rid of the smell immediately. The same happens with stinky felt pen smell. The people next door in our last apartment cooked highly odorous food and it would come in the vent of the guest bathroom and smell up the whole three bedroom apartment. I put the fan by the door, closed the door and it would get rid of the smell. So I know it's getting rid of all kinds of toxins. Plus they're great fans. Buyer Beware
I purchased the Honywell HCM-645 as a replacemnt for the Honeywell HCM-360.

I bought the #360 in Oct. 2005, and after about 4 weeks of operation the motor started to make a really bad rattling sound, Oh crap where is the receipt????? Can't find it!!!! Well, knowing that most stores won't return anything without a receipt if it's been used, I figured I would have to take advantage of the 5 year warrenty and contact the mfg. for a replacement. In the meantime I can't be without a humidifier so I went out and bought another one, same Mfg. (Honeywell)but a differant model to be on the safe side thinking if I go differant I shouldn't have any trouble......THINK AGAIN!!!!
I bought the HCM-645 on 11-15-05 and on this day 11-29-05, yes thats right 13 days later.....This motor has started to rattle, not quite as loud as the other but that won't last long.

I called the Mfg. about the one I had no receipt for and they wanted to charge me $10.00 for warrenty processing and I was to pay shipping cost both ways, estimated shipping cost would be $20.00 so for $30.00 they would send me a new humidifer. I paid $32.99 orginally does this make sense????. Well, I took the information on returning only to hang up the phone and call Wal-Mart just to see if they would take it back. Guess what? They had no problem in returning it for store credit and also took back the extra filters I purhased.

So my thought on Honeywell Humidifers, BUYER BEWARE, something is definatly wrong with the components in the motor operation in 2004 and 2005 models

Works Fine For Me
We bought this humidifier about 3 months ago because our bedroom was becoming so dry that we were waking with dry throats, bloody noses, and so on. This machine has solved that problem and we have encountered no significant difficulties with it. It is not too difficult to maintain, and the only problem in that area is locating filters in local stores, although Amazon and other online retailers carry them. (I do wonder why the tank always leaks water at exactly the moment I move it over the machine, but not before; I can't figure it out but there must be a reason why this happens). Re: Mold. Apparently the person who complained of mold didn't realize the filters should be changed regularly, frequency depending upon the quality of your water supply.

Great Product - Not like others have said
I read the reviews about how noisy these were, but went ahead and bought two of them because I also read that they work well. I plugged them in and they both aren't that noisy. Of course there is a little noise, but that's to be expected. It's a humidifier with a fan blowing. Out of all the humidifiers I've used this is the most quiet. The 4 gallon tank is great, and the digital controls make it super easy to set. We put one in the nursery and one in our master bedroom. The two have no problem keeping the entire upstairs comfy. They run when needed and shut off when the desired humidity is reached. It really is a great product. I have had the two of them for about a month, so I can't speak on dependability, but the design and function is great, and it's NOT too loud!

Terrific Air Cooler
I live in a dry, desert region in Southern California and the summers can get over 100o easily. The cost of running your AC here in astronomical and the fact that this unit uses only 57 watts on the high setting is already saving me tons of money.
The air purifier aspect seems to be working well. The air quality here is horrible, but since I've been using the FH-776, I've noticed it's somewhat easier to breathe.
Fan and air cooling ability? Very, very good. The fan can be set to swing mode so it'll get more coverage. The ice packs it comes with are somewhat useless(I just add ice cubes to the water tank), but the cold compress helps(it sits just above the water tank to help cool any evaporating air and cools it more before being blown out).
I mostly use it in a room of about 450 sq ft and it does ok during the day. To feel its effects during the day, you need to be sitting right in the air path, which feels great. I run it the most at night in front of a window(to pull in cool air) and the whole room is nice and cool by morning.
It's very portable: four wheel casters and side handles for easy moving and it can be put in a corner when not using it. The removable filter can be cleaned quickly and easily. The water tank is very accessible and will shut off if you open it to fill it up.
The modes you can run it in are good: nature, breeze, sleep. Nature has a consistent flow of air. Breeze will change just like actual breezes: strong one second, weak the next. Sleep mode automatically changes from off, low, med and high at varied intervals.
Finally, the 7.5 hour timer is great. I've set it right before going to bed and even after it had shut off, it still had some water in the tank when I got up.
Oh yeah, and the remote comes in very handy. The only button missing on the remote is to turn on the air purifier aspect, but that's ok.

Works well, but watch the hose!
I'm giving this 3 stars because of the water stain on my carpet!

The cooler works well the few times we've used it. It doesn't seem to need super-low humidity.

When we received the unit, we read the instructions thoroughly. We added water & we turned it on. We were pleased at the cool air it generated.

About 1/2 hour later, we checked the unit & the water was almost empty. It turns out that there is a hose that circulates the water back into the water tray. That hose rests (on the right side of the unit) on a flat tray with a small hole in it, and it was supposed to drip back into the water reservoir. However the water flies out of that hose so quickly it overwhelms the flat tray & then leaks out of the bottom of the unit... and onto the carpet!

Once we readjusted the hose so that the water actually went back into the water reservoir, it seems to work fine & no more leaks.

This is a great little cooler for a room where a portable air conditioner is impossible (no way to vent)...It noticeably makes the room cooler and is quiet (Lisa's must have been defective). Though I have to admit there doesn't appear an easy way to empty the water, filling it is pretty easy. Comes with a remote and has several different settings. Overall a great item!

Found a possible workaround for the constant resetting
We live in a very dry climate (Calgary, Alberta) and we have purchased many different warm mist humidifiers. It's always the same problem (the mineral build up on the heating element is hard to clean no matter what you do!). However, with this one, the heating element just wipes off and I only have to soak it in some vinegar once a week for a few minutes to remove a bit of build up that sticks to the element. I *do* like this heating element since it's extremely easy to clean.

We had the same "reset" problem as described above by other customers, and what we found is that when you plug it in (with a full tank of water), just start it on the LOW setting first, until the steam starts to come out, then you can put it on the HIGH setting (or leave it on LOW if you wish).

We figured out that if you go straight to HIGH to get it started, the machine shuts off (reset light comes on). It seems to get too hot too fast or something is too sensitive inside the machine. If you start on LOW, let it start steaming, then increase it to HIGH, we don't seem to have the reset problem.

We've only had the unit for a week... Let's hope it will hold up ok!

Nice Remote but Burping/Churping Noise
I've had this humidifier for about a week and use it at night in my bedroom. The remote is a very nice feature and will maintain the pre-set humidity level but there have been nights were it could not reach the setpoint and therefore stayed on all night. The only other drawback is that it makes this burping, churping noise while it boils the water. This can take some getting use to especially if you're use to sleeping dead quiet nights.

Stay Away
Otherwise trustworthy Bionaire has produced a defective model. I've been through two of them now, both with similar problems. They tend to shut off despite enough water being in the tank, and no other visible problem. First one never worked right, the second lasted for two months before it continually flashed the reset light. Customer service could offer no solutions. Stay away!

Keeps the air clean and odor free
I bought this primarily to reduce pollen in the air to keep my allergies under control. It seems to have helped, and I've found it is also great at eliminating pet odors (if I don't run it, the room starts to smell like our dog).

The filter replacement indicator is helpful, and the filters last a reasonable length of time.

I run it on low most of the time, which seems to be enough for it to do its job. It's not whisper quiet on low, but I find the noise level acceptable and I sleep with it running right next to my bed. Medium and high speeds are quite noisy and therefore I use them only to try to clear an odor in a hurry.

An item no household should be without
I bought the Hunter Quietflo Air purifier, to place in a room in my house so I could smoke and not worry about bothering anyone else. It has more than met it's original purpose. I can smoke in a room and within minutes the smoke is cleared. I also use it my bedroom when not in the smoke room. Since using it in my bedroom I have slept much better( except in turbo mode-it is a little loud, it's only drawback, but who needs to sleep with it on turbo when any of the other 2 settings work fine). It clears the air of all the things i didn't think affected me, but obviously did. This item was definitely money well spent. i would recommend it for anyone

Would not recommend
The reason I would not recommend purchasing this item (Hunter 30730 Tower Air Purifier) is that the price of the filter seem way too high priced for what the replacement hepa filters cost. At almost $30-40 a pop, depending on where you buy them, plus the carbon filter that has to be replaced as well, you can almost buy a brand new purifier. At some warehouse stores, you can buy TWO brand new purifiers for about $125.
The Purifier works fine and seems to do the job it says it will do but until they lower the price of the hepa filters, I'll continue to regret ever buying two of the purifiers.

Quiet, easy to use, and so gosh darn CUTE!
I got the penguin humidifier a week ago after researching multiple brands, some expensive ones, filter ones, big ones, warm ones, etc. And I read the reviews about it leaking or breaking on this one, and essentially there was some complaint on just about every brand out there--always a few problems. So for the $30 this one cost (and the fact that it is ridiculously adorable!) it seemed to cover what I needed: something that was not expensive, not too large and bulky, smaller reservoir so more fresh water going through it (and less water sitting around getting ookey) and would add humidity where ever it was.

It has been running almost non-stop for a week, minus filling times or when we were out, and has worked perfectly. The body reservoir, even when running on high, has lasted at least 16 hours. I haven't had problems with white dust on everything like my old-fashioned gigantic noisy one (I use tap water), and it doesn't spray water drops out with the mist either. It definitely made a difference running at night in the bedroom--no noses and throats feeling 'dry as dust' in the AM. The penguin has a small footprint, about 9" diameter and 12.75" tall. It runs almost silently BUT it does make a trickling noise and actually sounds like our tabletop fountain. It's a nice sound during the day but wore on me during the night; I wasn't used the sound and I kept thinking it's leaking when it wasn't. So now I run it for a while before bed and I sleep much better all around.

Things to watch out for though... the reservoir opening where you fill it, there is a screw-on cap with a spring-valve (like what's at the bottom of your coffee maker basket). There should be a silicone O-ring that fits in the top of the cap. Our O-ring was inside the opening, and since it was clear-ish could be easily missed. The O-ring could cause the cap to leak if not seated properly and the cap needs to be tightened snuggly. When filled and righted (there's even a little handle to carry it by) it should only drip slightly out of the spring-valve. Check that nothing is clogging the spring-valve by pressing it in (before filling) and that the flap is not folded. Only use COLD water in the reservoir, and if you boiled water WAIT for it to be room temp before using. Using hot water could definitely cause this plastic to crackle and crack. The body must sit squarely on the 'butt' or it can dribble over the side a tiny bit.

We have had absolutely no problems with this little cutie, and if I do I'll update my posting. It has a nice rocker on-off switch on his 'left butt cheek'. It has a dial on the front (I'll call it his bellybutton) to adjust the amount of mist; even on high he doesn't drip. The mist dial doesn't seem to affect the fountain noise at all; i.e. the lesser misting does not lessen any gurgling it does. A great little design and it does the job!

quiet, efficient and cute!
This frog humidifier is wonderful. I'm so glad I finally decided to get one after reading reviews on it since last winter. Unlike this picture, the actual product is a true Granny Smith apple green, or some might call it lime green.

-no expensive filter required. (my Holmes humidifier requires a new $13 filter about every 6 weeks)
-shuts off automatically when it runs out of water
-easy to refil water
-simple and easy to use
-cute!

CONS
-tiny green light is on when humidifier is in use and I persoanlly like a very dark bedroom at night. I just tape a dark piece of paper over it and problem solved. But it can also be a night light for a child's room.
-must be on a nightstand or some sort of elevated surface. Some people might not have that room to spare.
-it may be TOO cute and irresitible for little ones to keep their hands off it at first. But the newness wears off.

Great Styling & Innovative Features - BUT - a deeply flawed approach to humidification...
I have purchased many humidifiers over the last 10-15 years as I have chronic sinus problems that are exacerbated by dry winter air. As you research the ratings of these appliances - you see that ALL models from ALL brands have glaring problems in their designs.

I like the styling and feature set of the Bionaire brand - I have purchased 3 in total... the model I liked best is no longer made - but i thought i would give these a try ----- If you have even remotely hard water and if you don't want to be constantly replacing MOLDY wicking elements ----avoid this style of humidifier technology.

They are terrible. And it is not Bionaire's fault - all brands fall prey to the fundamental flaw of this approach to humidity. A wad of paper soaking in water all day/all night. It's a shame because the Galileo remote hygrometer/control unit is very well thought out and the looks of these units are great.

It's just that wicking humidifiers are fundamentally the wrong approach. So until somebody make a wick that is impervious to both mineral deposits AND mold/mildew... don't waste your money. I liked my old warm mist Bionaire and I am considering one again. There is still a scale problem there, but it seems the least annoying of all the humidifier technologies in terms of performance, maintenance and byproducts like mold, white dust or scale.

As for Bionaire - I feel there products are well built, smartly designed, attractive, acceptably quiet, and built to last a long time. I just don't find the wick approach to be at all intelligent. too bad - maybe another model. Will let you know.

Finally...one that doesn't leak!
Getting another humidifier has become a regular 3-month affair in our household with three bedrooms. Every Walmart/Target brand either has the fan die, is impossible to clean, or the filter is pressed against the side so that water leaks out and ruins the dresser. I've given up on the diffusers since the electrode gets corroded and the moisture just hangs in the corner.

So, we've now grabbed a Honeywell (Humidifier number 8). There is a handle on both the top and bottom of the tank, so it's easy to fill and easy to place into the humidifier. The 3 fan speeds are evenly set (one humidifier had 2 "barely breathing" settings followed by "jet turbine.") The humidity setting is a nice touch, but we usually set it for full blast anyways. The fan grill easily pops off so you can clean the fan blades. The water basin is separate from the motor assembly, so you can conceivably toss the whole bottom frame into the dishwasher to clean out the usual water deposit build-up that occurs with humidifiers. The filter is pretty large and it is not pressed against any of the sides, so NO LEAKS. It's been happily humming for over a month now with no issues.

Yah...I'm happy! I'm writing this as I buy a couple more for the rest of the rooms. It's a great price for a surprisingly capable humidifier.

Great for smaller rooms
We own two of these, and have had no problems with either of them for the past 5 years. For us, they are perfect in the winter for our children's rooms and provide a consistent amount of humidity, a level which we are able to choose. There are 3 fan levels which determines how much humidity is "blown" into the air. The lowest fan level is a soft hum, with the highest being rather loud. In addition, you can customize the level of moisture control; from maximum to light. The machine stops once dry (but remains on) and an indicator light comes on reminding you to either shut it off or refill. Stock up on filters and know that you will need to refill the machine every other night (at least) when used at the medium level of humidity and fan.

works great
This Honeywell humidifier works great. I live in the Northeast and bought this humidifier at the beginning of winter this year. It took almost one full week before it reached optimal humidity but it is now so much more comfortable in my house. I've bought other brands at similar price points and this is by far the best. To extend the life of the filter use the Protec cleaning cartridge.

Very Noisy
This is the second one of these humidifiers that I have had. The first one made by Slant/Fin lasted me 8 years and was great. The replacement which I purchased in Dec. 2008 is terrible. The unit has a very noisy fan that I have not been able to quiet down to the unnoticeable level. I do not recommend purchasing this item.

Best I've used
I've been using this humidifier for years, first as the Slant/Fin. My doctor wanted me to get it because of its germ-free output and we got two to place in the rooms most used. I haven't found the noise bothersome. They do need to be cleaned regularly and should not be allowed to stand with water in them when unused. We put them away for the summer, but clean them very well first. We use them 24/hrs a day during the winter and have only had to replace one in the four or five years we've used them. The one we replaced sat with water in it because of inattentionEnviracaire EWM-350 Warm Mist Humidifier.

Water probe tips rust in less than a week. Owned by Kaz now, have been through 4 units at my expense of sending them to them for repair and they don't seem to be able to fix this problem. Neither do they refund money for the defective units and it takes 8 to 10 weeks to get them back so don't bank on a refund where ever you purchase them. I purchased them from a different store than this one.
They also do not put out any more moisture than the far less expensive models of any other brand.

Great Product

Charming, but not forever
I gave this to my daughter for her birthday. She was thrilled with the product. After a week or so she called and said that it had stopped working. She read directions and let it rest for a while. She made sure everything was clean inside. It still didn't work. She finally called to have it returned. Amazon said they would give her a merchandise credit, but she was so disheartened. I hope others have not had a similar experience.

Does exactly what it's supposed to do
I bought one of these for myself about 4 years ago and liked it so much I got one for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. She liked hers, too, till her daughter broke it. I've used mine more in the winter than during the rest of the year. I find it relaxing to watch the colors and the soft, flowing mist that also keeps the room humidified. I'm not sure why the other reviewers had a problem with theirs. I've let the water evaporate a few times, and when I filled it up, it didn't work at first, but within 15-20 minutes, it started flowing just like always, and also worked after my granddaughter poured all the water out, and it set there with the power on for hours before I discovered it. It's not difficult to keep clean, but when used continuously, it may get some calcium deposits or even a little moldy looking stuff down in the water. I just wash it carefully with clear water.

I'm just now getting into aromatherapy, and I've got essential Rose Otto oil in it, and it smells wonderful. I would recommend these to anyone.

Really disappointed
Well, I'd written a glowing, very detailed review of this item 2 days after I received it as a birthday gift. It's beautiful, works well diffusing oils into the air gently, and *didn't survive* 4 days of intermittent use.

The first time the water came below the sensor, it turned off, as it was supposed to. According to the (badly written) instructions, I should have been able to just add water to bring the level over the sensor and it would work again. Nope. I unplugged it, filled it, and the sensor light was still on. I let it rest for about an hour. It turned on and made mist/diffused for about 3 minutes and shut off again - the red light indicating a too-low water level. Unfortunately, the sensor happened to be under about an inch of water at the time. After many attempts to remedy this situation, I'm going to have to ask the purchaser for the receipt so I can send it back. It's too bad because I was completely in love with this item.

I might try just to get a replacement, but I might return it for a completely different ultrasonic diffuser.

Be aware that you can't buy filters for this product. If you need a new filter you have to buy a new machine. you can call them at 800-477-0457.

Worst product I have ever purchased
After years of replacing cool-mist filters, I wanted to try a humidifier with a so-called permanent filter. The noise is not really any more bothersome than other cool-mist humidifiers on the market. The problem with this product is the filter system. For the first month or so, I was able to keep the filter clean per the product instructions. But then, as with all cool mist humidifiers, the filter accumulates dust from the air intake and other mineral deposits. Unfortunately, it is absoultely impossible to clean the deposits and debris out of the interior wicking of the filter. The manufacturer's instructions say (in fact warn) only to clean the unit using vinegar...well, that method only works for some of the mineral deposits for the first 4 weeks or so. Plus, even with the vinegar method, you can't get the particles washed out of the interior of the filter! So after 3 months, the perma-filter doesn't retain sufficient moisture to effectively humidify the air. You are better off buying a regular cool-mist humidifier with a filter that can be replaced every few months. It will save you time, money and frustration. I have never written a review of any product before but this product is so poor that I felt compelled to do so at this time and warn others not to make the same mistake I made. This is truly one of the worst products I have ever purchased.

Honeywell HCM 800 humidifier
I purchased this product at a retail store recently and overall I think it's great. I was concerned about a line in the manual that said to discard the filter at the end of the season, but when I contacted Kaz / honeywell about it, they said it was a misprint and with proper care the filter will last for the life of the product. Makes sense since that's what is advertised on the box! They got back to me quickly, too.
The machine is not silent, it's got a fan on it which to me provides some nice white noise to block out odd noises that might bother my sleep. It obviously puts out a lot of moisture because I have to refill the tank once a day, and that does as well as the crappy old vicks vaporizers that I used to use...those things were terrible. They made boiling bubbly noises and started to spit when they got old. 65 bucks for the Honeywell isn't cheap (not to me anyway) but the cost was worth it so far. I haven't had it very long yet so we'll have to wait and see how it does in the long term.
Almost forgot- there is a dial control for humidity level; the window is green when the humidity is right, and blue when the humidity doesn't match the setting on the machine. It amounts to a nice night light since I don't know or care how it functions; I just leave it on high all the time.

I just want everyone to know that since 2008, Planet Waves has been making these NEW & IMPROVED Humidipaks! Look at the red sticker on the box. Don't judge this product by the OLD version! The New & Improved Humidipaks being offered here on Amazon contain a semi-solid gel and DO NOT LEAK! I have these NEW Humidipaks and they are great! I still recommend getting an Oasis Hygrometer for use inside of the guitar case. Then, only use your humidification system until the humidity is between 45-55%. Leaving any humidification system, (this includes Dampit, Oasis, etc.), inside of the guitar without checking can lead to over humidification. I got this advice for the seasoned luthiers at C.F. Martin Guitar! I think they know what they are talking about.

leakage!
I purchased this product after seeing it reviewed by Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars. It seemed like a great long term solution for keeping my two Taylors humidified properly. After using the system for several months, I removed it after seeing several less than complimentary reviews in various places. At that time I detected leakage from the pouch inserts. I decided not to risk damage to my guitars and threw out the entire system. Went back to dampits and a remote humidity sensor. A bit more work intensive but much better peace of mind.

Humidipak--It's The Best
Humidipak works! It is easy and simple to use. If you want to be worry free, start using this product. The only reason I rated it a 4 is the expense but if you spent $2800.00 or more on your guitar like I did, you won't fuss too much about the price. NOT good for long term use
I've had this humidifier for many months. It does what it is supposed to do which is humidify the air. It's cute. It works consistently. That is what the 2 stars are for.

I subtracted three stars because of the cleaning. It is almost impossible to properly clean.

The WELL: There are many nooks and crannies in the well that defy cloths and sponges, and even when you use vinegar to disinfect (as recommended) there remains a distressing yellowish stain in the corners and around the floater(?) that you just can't reach.

The WATER TANK: If there is a way to clean the tank I have not found it. I have pushed, pulled, screwed ... nothing allows you to remove the base and clean it. And it needs to be cleaned! Because the water sits in the tank for hours at a time, sediments deposit on the floor. This is natural. It is also natural for this sludge to become a breeding ground for the bacteria that the instructions warn you about. And you can't clean it. I do the vinegar thing here too, but my eyes (and the yellow stain) tell me that the tank isn't clean. I suppose the fact that the water is cool and not heated contributes to this situation as well.

I do not recommend this humidifier to anyone for the reasons stated above. If Crane can find a way to allow for proper cleaning and/or introduce an element to eliminate bacteria, then go for it. Otherwise, purchase another.

Wonderful cool-mist humidifier!
This humidifier is the perfect size for a bedroom. The tank empties in about a day, so the water doesn't sit around too long to get mildew or mold. The humidifier puts out lots of moisture, and is absolutely whisper-quiet! We have the penguin-shaped one for our son's room, and this one for ours. Both are great.

Super quiet
We bought the Vicks cool mist humidifier first. it was so noisy in the nursery that we didn't use it when our daughter was sleeping. We bought this one hoping that it would be a little more quite. We can't even hear it! It also takes up very little space and is easy to fill in the shallow bathroom sink. Awesome purchase. worth the extra $.

Simple yet pretty efficent!
I wanted this last year for christmas, I did not get it. I saw it in a Walgreens ad this year, and thought about it again. We bought one tonight.
This system works by a plastic piece that comes down from the top and "swirls" the water around and pulls it kinda like a fan and tornado all in one. The "swirling" tornado affect causes the water to drip around the sides like rain. Air is pulled in through one side on the top, circulates through the water and then comes back out the other side. Once the air goes through the water the water is suppose to remove odors and odor causing bacteria in the air.
The system comes with 3 scents, vanilla, lime, and citrus. I typically like vanilla scent, but after putting it in the system it reminded me of a unpleasant smelling vanilla cleaning product! I also feel that the citrus might be the same. The lime seems like it might be o.k., but have not tried it yet. They definatly need to work on better smelling scents. Luckily, I own and use aromatherapy oils, and decided to try some in this, and although they do not last super long, they smell great and do not seem to affect the system, so it looks like I will be using them instead.
Brethe adds humidity to the air, you can feel it, and it also seems to cool the air in the room some. It also does seem to clean the air and make it smell good. Plus if you like a "night" light, there is a option to have the water alluminated. I partially also wanted this because I sleep better with some white noise, I would say the white noise from the is equal to a fan being on low to medium, not real heavy, but noticable.
It seems very easy to clean, the top silver part easily lifts right off of the base, there is a handle on the base where you put the water in, and you just sit the top part aside and fill the bottom, it fits in our bathroom sink which is nice, and makes it easy to fill! It does not have alot of parts so less to worry about breaking, and cleaning.
All in all a great, simple machine, with several perks, does what it says, like I mentioned before, my only big complaint is the scents, if they work on those, this little system would be excellent!

Makes the room smell great
Easy to use and the scents smell great when you turn it on.

I put in Lavender in the evening and my Yorkies and Chihuahua fall asleep quickly and rest through the night. It also helps keep away doggie smells.

It does not add much moisture to the room and it has a loud white noise sound. It also has blue led lights that illuminate the water and make a nice night light at night.

Manufacturer recommends that it is placed on a waterproof surface when in use.

Have two of them and love them
I have two of these. I use one in my livingroom and one in my family room. They DO work and work well. I have 3 cats and a dog. When the brethe machines are running the air in the house feels fresh and smells good. I do agree that the vanilla scent is horrible. The lime and citrus are ok, but I like the lavender the best. It smells wonderful. I thoroughly believe this does clean the air to some extent. When I turn mine off the remaining water had a brown tint to it a lot of the time. Obivously the Brethe is not going to be as effective as an air purifier, but it doesn't make those claims. I believe it does exactly what it says and I am very happy with it.

Jeff is right - Don't buy this humidifier!
Does not work as advertised. When set at our preferred 40% humidity, the humidistat room reading reads 45% and never varies.

When the preferred humidity level was set to 50% the fan will run until the humidity level reaches 55% and then shut off. But, after just A FEW SECONDS, the room humidity level reading drops to 47-49% and the fan comes on. Again, it will run for just a few seconds and repeat the above process continually, never staying on or off for more than a few seconds at a time. There is no way humidity can rise or fall that much in just a few seconds.

After calling the factory, they said it was defective and to bring it back to the store. A second unitwas ordered which ended up being no better than the first.

I ended up returning the second unit as well. Stay away from this particular humidifer. It's noisey and cheaply made.

Humidistat was broken
I paid 113 USD for this unit. It was awkward to use, and felt cheaply made. It did a fine job humidifying the house but the humidistat was broken. Its humidity reading would not drop below 50%, when other humidistats in my home were indicating 30%. According to it, the humidity level was about 60% ! I have found a review elsewhere indicating the same problem. I returned it and bought a unit for 70 USD that works much better.

Wick went dry in 2 days and LOUD!
I followed the instructions by filling the tank, turned on high, and never let it run dry. By mid day 2 the wick was 3/4 dry. The unit on high was so loud that it can be heard on all 3 stories of my house. In their defense, this was my first humidifier. It's going back tomorrow.

I use this near my car litter box. Everytime I clean it out there is always dust in it building up. It is good for a little area.

I just bought this item at a local walmart since it was on sale. Figured if it didn't work like most of these air purifiers end up I can just walk in and return it.

I plugged it in my spare bathroom where I keep my cat food, spare litter and cat box. That room has never smelt so good. Its been about 4 days and I actually forgot to clean the box 1 or 2 times since I never smell it anymore.

This item needs no filters just wash it once a week or so depending on exposure to debris. It also provides a night light. However the light is really weak so do buy this item for the light. Over all just under a week in and I am very satisfied with this product. This item is also ULTRA SILENT. I mean the only way I know it is on is I switched it on, and later that day the stink of the room is mysteriously gone!!

Good Product - Could Be Better
I purchased the Ionic Pro a few months ago to help alleviate litter box odor. It was smaller than expected and is really not a "convenient" product. It does not have an electrical cord. It plugs directly into the electrical outlet. So it is really difficult to place it exactly where you want it to be and thus, its effectiveness could be hampered.

It does a good job on most odors most of the time--minimal to slight odors. However, when there is a particularly stong odor, the product is less effective. If you want to combat strong odors, I would suggest purchasing one of the more powerful/bigger Ionic products.

Dampit is good, damit!
The dampit guitar humidifiers are great. They are simple and effective. I don't bother with the provided plastic "hole cover" - I just place the humidifier inside the guitar while it's in it's case - that way it humidifies the whole instrument. A word of caution, as is clearly stated in the instructions, make sure to wring out and shake off excess water to avoid staining the unfinished wood inside the guitar. I've never had this problem, but I've read from other folks who mustn't have followed the instructions - and have had a problem. There are other, more expensive, more elaborate humidifying systems out there - but in my opinion, this one out-performs them and is much simpler to use! It's a great product.

I've owned two other regular Dampits and this one is huge!

Best on the market if you ask me. My guitars are thankful.

Why buy one when you can have two? You won't be sorry. Just make sure to squeeze all water out.

preventive medicine for your acoustic guitar
I live in the high mountain desert and my home (and guitars) are subjected to temperature extremes despite my having some measure of climate control.

I noticed that one of my acoustics was slowing losing its arch in the soundboard and I became concerned that the dry air was destroying this great instrument. After reviewing material on the web about maintaining proper humidity in the guitar itself and viewing a demonstration on how the use of this product had the capacity to restore a dry or drying guitar, I purchased this product with an eye to prevent any further deterioration in my guitar.

I am pleased to say that it works. At first I noticed that the guitar was not getting any dryer and the apparent change in the soundboard stopped. After about a month, the arch has come back into the top. I am glad I bought this product.

If you choose to use this product, follow directions and get some information from the web (Taylor Guitars for one) on how to tell if the instrument is dry and what to look for as humidity is restored.

My only complaint is that the measuring system to determine the level of humidity leaves quite a bit to be desired. Check your local Radio Shack or research and shop for on Amazon an easier to use meter.

A great product, you will not be sorry!

Well i didn't pay attention as to when i bought the humidifier that Wal Mart didn't carry the filters as well. This whole unit doesn't serve its purpose. the pads get dirty easily and need replaced and due to the lack of availability in stores, i don't think its worth the hassle. the filters were great for about a week and then i needed to replace it, i even went as far as taking out the filter in the day and setting out in sunlight to dry and put them back in at night for use. Overall not worth the hassle or money, look for other and better.

A Breath of Fresh (or Purified) Air
I searched through a large selection of air filters trying to optimize price, utility, reputation, and ease of use (I don't have time to replace some components every 6 months and other components every 3 months, etc). I decided on the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier. From there, it was a search for a reasonable retailer. Due to price (along with free shipping) and Amazon backing, I chose All Seasons Health.

The product arrived quickly and in perfect condition--I would definitely order other products through this retailer.

I pulled the Healthmate out of the box and after reading the instructions, I plugged it in and away it went (yep, that was it). I was having a problem with new carpet installation (an abundance of VOC's causing watering eyes, sore throat, and dizziness); the difference in just two days was remarkable and noticed by others. The Healthmate has three settings, low, medium, and high. The output on high is amazing and has an added benefit of dramatically increasing airflow in the room. The low setting is quiet enough to sit next to the machine and watch a movie without difficulty.

According to the instructions, in about four to five years I will have to replace the filter inside and from a cursory review of the instructions, it should be much simpler than replacing my water filter.

I will add further comments closer to allergy season.

The best air filter I ever bought - worth the money!
The Austin Air Healthmate is the best I've ever owned. One large unit is enough for our entire house. It reduces (or even eliminates) odors from our cat's litter box and makes the stale air in our home fresher when we return from a couple of days away. We run it in the bedroom at night and wake up feeling healthier than we did before we got one of these. It's quiet on the lowest setting, and a little loud but very powerful on the highest setting. There's easy maintenance (just vacuum the outside once a month). Replacement filters are a little on the expensive side (around $200), but well worth it. The salesperson that sold us ours said we'd have to replace the filter every five years. We run ours constantly and had to replace it after three years. I think the expense is still worth it, as the quality of this product cannot be matched by less expensive purifiers.

This is the best air filter
Hi...I ordered this cleaner but after consideration, felt it was too big for us. The company, Noel, was cordial, friendly, cooperative when I needed to return it. I feel the smaller one room version would be better for us as I'd also like to move it all around the house, including the upstairs. I did a lot of research and felt this was the best on the market. You buy the Austin, you've bought the best.

How worthless? Let me count the ways, unless you are a child, the fit does not fit. This is not an electrical device and you are only allowed to use hot tap water, about a cup's worth, so there is no steam. Save yourself a bit of money and have a hot cup of tea, it will surely produce more steam than this ill-conceived gizmo.

Too small, no electric heating!
This is not as big as it looks in the picture. It is tiny! You have to heat up the water yourself separately and then pour it into this piece of junk. There is no electric heating. Stay away from this.

I would have given it a negative star. This is not an electronic device and it cannot use boiling water. I agree with the previous comment that by putting boiling water in a cup will produce more steam than this device.

Excellent deal for the price!
This machine works Great and is very easy to refill. The unit is well-designed. There is a hold tab on the top of the water tank, so it is easy to insert into base. It has a handle on the bottom of the water tank, so it is easy to carry and refill the tank. Overall, a good little unit for the price.

Sunbeam hit the mark with this cool humidifier
We were in need of a humidifier because the two that we had (same model--one upstairs and one downstairs) both broke within a couple of months of each other. We knew we didn't want to purchase the same ones as before for obvious reasons so we started our search. We saw the Sunbeam model on Amazon and it seemed to have most of the features we were looking for. We were suprised that the controls were not electronic but we weren't bothered by having to use a knob--as long as it worked well and lasted. We are pleased to say that so far it has worked very well. It is quiet, and the best part for me is the design of the tank. They made it easy to fill. It has a handle on the tank that you can hold while filling it, or if you prefer, you can place it down (in a tub or large sink)to fill it because it is flat on the bottom(or the top depending on how you look at it). It does go through water pretty frequently--maybe our house is dry. It goes through about 1 1/2 tanks per day. So we have to be mindful of that. We are hopeful that it lasts longer than our other humidifiers did, then it will really have been a smart purchase!! Time will tell...

I purchased this outdated unit because of the low price. Instructions to install were easy to follow and it went well. I used a current sensor switch which was also easy to set up and the unit is doing very well. We were dealing with humidity levels as low as 21A% during winter months. We have set the humidistat at approximately 42-43 and it keeps humidity levels ranging from 38-41%. We are very happy with this system.

Very energy efficient and works great
I installed the HE360A onto a new Ruud 95%+ high-efficiency dual-stage heating and cooling system and I'm controlling the unit with a Ritetemp 6080 thermostat. The humidifier works beautifully, and based upon my research with heating and cooling specialists, this unit is optimally-designed to conserve power and to protect the heating and cooling system. Bypass units (that use a piece of ducting connecting the return and supply sides of the system) rob the heating system's efficiency and will push moist air through the system. Installing this unit on the supply side of the ductwork ensures that all of the humidified air will be moved into the home, not back into the system. While this design does use more water than some other units, the savings in power and the increased efficiency of the unit will minimize its financial impact. By the way, I attached the unit to a hot water supply, not cold, as this helps the moisture to be absorbed into the heated air.

The newer Honeywell humidifiers create steam to humidify the air. While this is probably optimal for humidification purposes and should minimize the amount of water used, the amount of electricity these systems use to create the steam will definitely impact your pocketbook. From a "green" perspective, I find that water is a cheaper and more renewable resource than electrical power. The old-fashioned drum humidifier units will save water, but use a holding tray of water to soak a pad that the air travels through. If not cleaned thoroughly and often, they develop mold and mildew and that will get circulated through your house... a very dangerous and unhealthy option.

Installing this unit did prove a bit of a challenge because of it's combination with the Ritetemp 6080 electronic thermostat, which includes a humidistat. Most online "experts" say that the HE360 units won't work with this kind of thermostat/humidistat because of incompatible electrical design of the two systems. However, I'm a firm believer that anything is possible with enough research and who doesn't like a challenge? To make this work, I purchased a small 24VAC SPDT relay from Grainger, part number 4A708 (about $15) and did NOT use the installation kit recommended for the humidifier or the humidistat that was provided with the unit. Since my air handler provides 24VAC to the thermostat and the thermostat interally provides settings to determine when the humidifier will run, I used the relay to control power to the 120VAC side of the system which acts as a switch to turn the entire humidifier on and off. To accomplish this, I installed a new electrical circuit and outlet to be used solely by the humidifer. I installed the relay inside an electrical box to control the power to this outlet. Using low voltage wiring I connected the relay to the "C"ommon contact on the air handler and to the "H"umidifier wire from the thermostat. I then used a wire nut to connect the two yellow wires on the HE360, which basically sets the unit "on" any time it has power. When the air handler is running in heat mode and the thermostat determines that humidification is required, the relay is powered and provides 120VAC power to the outlet and the humidifier is turned on. When the relay loses power, the 120VAC is turned off that the HE360 shuts off. The thermostat can be set to work two ways: to run the humidifier and the air handler's blower anytime when the humidistat says that humidity is required, or to run the humidifier only when the air handler is in heat mode and the blower is running and humidity is required. I could have directly wired this unit to the air handler's power, but I chose to use the outlet so that I could unplug the unit in an emergency or for service.

I strongly recommend this unit... I've tried several of whole house units over the last 20 years and this is the first that really works. I've already helped others to install these units on their HVAC systems and all of them work great, none have had any problems and all are amazed at the difference the humidifier makes in their homes.

Just doesn't work as advertised
I was tired of refilling room humidifiers every night, so I installed this unit. Installation was fairly easy and straightforward, and the unit came with everything needed to install except 1/4" copper tube. However, even when it's set to maximum humidity (60), it simply doesn't add a lot of moisture to the air. To check, I ran the water supply from a 5-gallon bucket instead of the hot water pipe, and after 24 hours it had used about 3 gallons of water, and hadn't made a difference to the humidistat, which read 25%. This is in an 1800 s.f. uninsulated (but not drafty) old house, where the heat runs frequently as it's currently in the teens outside. The other problem is that it uses an enormous amount of water. For the 3 gallons that are sent into the heating ducts, another 15 or so goes down the drain. I checked this by running the drain into a 5-gallon container and it filled up in less than 8 hours. I will probably shut it off and never use it, so for me it was a big waste of money and effort.

WORKS WELL

It's not that bad!!
Ok, so yes, this unit is loud. But I actually like it because it provides background noise at night for my two young daughters. It helps them to sleep more soundly, believe it or not... I understand that's not for everyone, but it's a nice, consistent noise, and is great for drowning out other sounds at night.

I think it provides decent humidification as long as you don't overdo it with the size of the space you are trying to control... It really hasn't been that bad. My complaint is that the filter got dirty pretty quickly so I have to replace it relatively often. I have never had a leakage problem. And for me, it's not difficult to refill at all...

Over priced, cheaply made, ineffective

Despite the high price point this product is badly designed and poorly made.

Problems:

1. It does NOT effectively increase the humidity in the air.

2. It is extremely loud.

3. If you tap it and it tilts, even a small amount water will spill out of it.

4. The opening to add water is on the bottom of the tank which gaurenties it will eventually start leaking.

5. When you pull out the tank to re-fill it it drips a lot.

When that happens it will start to slowly leak. The opening should be on the top to prevent this from ever being an issue.

A true work of art
My wife purchased this for me as a christmas present. Each drawer (7) will hold over 20 cigars even with large ring guages. The hygrometer is very accurate and comes pre calibrated. Seasoning this beast is easy but you will want to be thourough so you dont spoil your smokes. There is a himidifier for each drawer but you can put other kinds in it if you like. Because of the layout you will want at least 3 going at all times especially if you are in a dry area. I am running all seven. The cabinet is high quality construction. The paint is a piano finish with multiple layers of laquer. The door seal and hardware are top notch. This cabinet holds a prime view in our house because I like my buddies to drool.

1/27/09: Very stable cabinet. Once seasoned the humidity stays right on. I also use humidipaks to keep the humidity from getting too high. This was an excellent gift so If you are looking at one of these for someone special they will love it.

Great... except for the SCREAMING BLUE LIGHT!!!
As a general rule, I'm a big fan of these vapor plug-ins. But the 'night light' feature on this product is obnoxiously bright!!! If your child is a light sleeper, this is NOT the product for you!

These Really Work!
These plug ins really work! I have used these for the babies when they have had colds and trouble breathing. After I plug one in and close the door - a few minutes later I go in and I can smell the Eucalyptus. It really helps you breath better.

Great for clearing stuffy noses!
My 2 yr old son has chronic congestion & this product has been a great help. I use them nearly every night & he's able to sleep much better. I wish there was a larger box available as they get expensive when you need them nightly but they work better than anything else and it's much easier to use. The blue night light is perfect, too!

BEST HUMIDIFIER / VAPORIZER EVER!!! SAFE for Kids & Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Fungal,
I bought this after reading a review of vaporizers / humidifiers in Good Housekeeping magazine, http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-testing/reviews-tests/appliances-electronics/best-humidifiers. This Air O Swiss model is different than the one recommended by GH, but it is AWESOME.

It's a cold mist, so it's safe for kids / pets; I only need to fill it once a day; it is designed so that it won't grow mold or harbor germs / viruses; very fine mist & leaves no powdery residue. VERY EASY to USE! AWESOME!

BONUS -- much lower energy costs than other humidifiers / vaporizers AND much more effective.

Utterly silent
I ordered this unit after reading various reviews online, to replace an older Honeywell humidifier in my children's room. It is exactly as promised; it does its work quickly and effectively, generating a fine mist with no residue. It requires little maintenance compared with standard, filter humidifiers and it allows the user to control not only the humidity level but also the rate by which it reaches that level. My only complaint? It is TOO QUIET! My older, noisier machine served also as a white-noise system to help my children sleep. Now, I have to go out and buy a real white noise machine. I guess that's not much of a complaint. If you're serious about getting a top level humidifier at a reasonable price, get this one.

Worked great...for a month!
Really had high hopes for this thing, considering the cost. Sometimes you actually get what you pay for. But after a month or so it just plain quit. It appears the gold-colored coating on the atomizer plate just disintegrated! I called customer service and he took me through some steps that didn't fix it, then initiated the return procedure. We'll see if I get a refund or not.
